One often criticized drawback of the Model T is that it lacks a water pump. The engine is cooled by a natural circulation system based on the thermosiphon principle. Hot water, being lighter, rises to the top of the engine and enters the cooler. When the temperature decreases, it returns to the bottom and cycles back into the engine. This was the cooling flow route for most cars at the time, even after water pumps were equipped, until the invention of cross-flow radiators. Water pumps were sold as an optional component separate from the Model T.
