Generally, marine engines fall into the category of low-speed engines, with engine speeds typically below 800 rpm (with the exception of specific speedboats), because marine engines need to be matched with propellers. Considering the efficiency of this match, excessively high engine speeds are not beneficial. Additionally, some large cargo ships or cruise liners use engines that burn heavy oil (the poorest quality fuel). These engines are typically two-stroke low-speed engines, although there are also high-power four-stroke medium-speed engines, which are generally used on ships as auxiliary engines for power generation and other purposes.
